Porsche’s 911 was being made steadily better and more refined during the 1970s, and especially so with the SC generation in 1978. The new 3.0 engine was another step ahead and the cars were very popular through the end of their run in 1983. Consequently, many were driven a lot and today wear 180,000-mile odometers. Appreciated for their classic good looks, reliable mechanicals and affordable maintenance, we try to grab every low-mile one we find.
This unusual Wine Red Metallic sunroof coupe has an excellent history with ownership that culminated in a complete, rotisserie restoration by a marque specialist in the Southeast. A billing summary of all the work that was done runs five pages and totals over $78,000. We also have an assortment of photographs from the restoration. The car was restored in its original special-order color, including the tan leather—not vinyl—accented by matching carpets and dark brown dash. Complete engine & transaxle overhauls along with all the suspension, brakes and plumbing were done.
A local gentleman obsessed with details bought the car immediately after and while he put 7000 miles on it during the past 5 years, he made many small improvements to the car. Some were minor—putting LED bulbs in all the instrument lights so you can actually see what they read at night—and some were more involved, like replacing the elderly fuse panel with a new unit employing modern fuses & relays. The car offers upgrades to the air conditioning, with a newer-style rotary compressor and modern refrigerant and custom under-dash outlets. A Carerra oil cooler was installed as well. The original owner’s books are in the glove box, and the trunk holds all the original tools, spare & pump, and also a great many spare parts, Porsche books, spare keys and catalogs plus anything original that was replaced—like the chrome lug bolts; the original black ones are there—and a photo log of the restoration plus factory shop manuals. There is a novel custom mount (easily removed) that holds a Garmin GPS or could be a phone dock instead. This is an opportunity to enjoy a nicely-restored 911 complete with modern upgrades for considerably less than its restoration cost, or the time necessary to create one.
