Vehicle Details

This iconic vehicle is interesting as we did not do the complete restoration. Instead, our car-hunting service was able to track it down for a buyer here in Colorado. It’s an outstanding resto, done not long ago. Our work was to install factory-appearance seatbelts, so the car can be taken on rallies near and far. By fabricating mounting hardware, and attaching it directly to the tubular space frame, we were able to create a perfectly original appearance that’s as safe as possible.

Mercedes shocked the racing world in 1952 when it revealed its revolutionary 300 SLR with a tubular spaceframe chassis concept formerly only seen in aircraft. This was augmented by installing the Grand Prix-derived 6-cylinder engine tilted to its side to lower the hood and improve aerodynamics. An equally-revolutionary step was incorporating fuel injection instead of carburetors. The first production 300SL in 1954 was the famous ‘Gullwing’ coupe with its signature elevating doors, made necessary by the chassis design. The roadster SL followed in 1957 and shared the spaceframe concept and fuel injected engine. At the time, Mercedes’ 300SLs were the most advanced sports cars in the world, having performance and engineering no other manufacturer could match—not even Ferrari.
