Vehicle Details

1971 was the last year of the landmark ‘Pagoda’ 113-series Mercedes-Benz SL, and are the most desirable to enthusiasts today, having all the improvements incorporated since the first 230, plus our DOT-mandated upgrades. This is a three-owner car, just received from the estate of the last owner—a gentleman who had the car for 30 years. It is still in its original dark blue color with Cognac leather interior—not ‘Tex,’ as most of these cars had.

It was ordered with both hard and convertible tops, automatic, power steering, chrome roof bars and leather. When new, it received dealer-installed A/C, since the factory didn’t offer it. We have a large file of past service records that show diligent maintenance all along, including new Michelins in 2017—but the car has hardly been driven since. Our shop has serviced the brakes and other ‘sittin’ disease’ issues (see our blog article) and now it’s ready to be enjoyed again by the next custodian. It was refinished in the original color years ago and still looks great—a reliable indicator of a well-done job with care given to the preparation.

The car has its original spare & cover, the bundle of owner’s books and pouch of hand tools. The only thing non-stock is the cam cover was polished years ago, and looks good, but could easily be returned to the painted finish. (The spot welds are in the front fenders, but ‘notches’ are gone). We can see where some rust was repaired in the floor decades ago, and when it’s finally time to freshen the car up, will likely need attention. Also, the driver’s seat has some wear, but we didn’t want to disturb the consistent patina of an all-original leather interior—the next owner can make those decisions on this classic Mercedes-Benz.
